Our inner health is reflected by our beautiful skin, so we need to take good care of our skin according to the season as our skin reacts tremendously to different factors like the cold and the hot weather. As we all know that winter comes with a colder, windier and drier weather so our skin needs some extra help and protection otherwise the skin of different parts of our body will begin to become dry, chapped and crusty.

When the weather changes our skin care routine should be changed too, like we can use some oil based moisturizer rather than water based ones as a protective layer will be created by the oil that retains more moisture than a cream. Sunscreens can protect our skin from winter sun, combined with snow glare. The skin on our hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and as it has fewer oil glands it’s difficult to keep it moist during winter which can cause itching, cracking. To avoid this we can wear gloves (cotton) before wearing wool.  We should avoid wet gloves and socks as those can cause itching, cracking and irritation to our skin. We can place several Humidifiers throughout our home as those get more moisture in the air, which helps to prevent our skin from drying out.

Using petroleum jelly or glycerin for feet is good during winter and using exfoliates which helps any moisturizer to sink in faster and deeper by getting the dead skin off periodically is also very useful. Instead of using harsh pills, masks, and alcohol-based toners we can use cleansing milk, mild foaming cleanser, a toner without alcohol and clay based masks. After sometime in the cold, soaking in a hot bath feels great but it can lead to a loss of moisture by damaging the lipid barriers in the skin. We can get relief from itchy dry skin by taking a lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda. In these ways we can protect our skin from the dryness, cracking and many other problems which winter brings with it.

  • It’s that time of the year when you need to be extra careful about your body. If you don’t normally apply a moisturizer to your skin, now may be the time to get in the habit. If you use a moisturizer but find that your skin is still dry and cracked, you may benefit from applying the moisturizer more frequently.
