Obesity in children is a growing concern that is not given anywhere near the amount of attention it should be given due to many people’s belief that if you ignore the problem it will eventually go away. Many individuals who are obese as children grow up to be obese as adults and this can cause many serious and in most cases life threatening illnesses and conditions.

Obesity means an excess amount of body fat. Childhood obesity is caused due to sedentary lifestyle, less exercise, consumption of high-calorie foods like pizza and burgers etc. Consumption of sugar-laden soft drinks may contribute to childhood obesity.

Physical inactivity of children is also considered to be a serious cause, and children who fail to engage in regular physical activity are at a greater risk of obesity. Childhood obesity is often the result of interplay between many genetic and environmental factors.

Exclusive breast-feeding and delaying introduction of solid foods is recommended for newborn infants for its nutritional and other beneficial effects. It may also protect against obesity in later life.

In early childhood, children should be given healthy, low-fat snacks and should be encouraged to take part in vigorous physical activity every day. Their television viewing should be limited. Older children can be taught to select healthy, nutritious foods and to develop good exercise habits. Avoid snacking or eating meals while watching TV, movies, and videos.

Another form of obesity treatment in children could be done by increasing physical activity. It can decrease, or at least slow the increase, fatty tissues in obese children. It is recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Lifestyles and behaviors are established at an young age. It is important for parents and children to remain educated and focused on making long-term healthy lifestyle choices. Schools play a particularly critical role by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors. Dietitians can help children understand healthy eating habits and how to implement them in their long-term diet.
